Setting financial goals that actually serve you
Numbers don’t tell the whole story.
Too often, we equate financial success with milestones: a certain salary, a net worth benchmark, or the perfect portfolio; but money is only one piece of the puzzle. Real success includes how you feel about your life – not just how your bank account looks.
At GreatDane Investment, we believe financial goals should reflect who you are, not who you think you should be.
The problem with traditional goals:
It’s easy to set goals that sound impressive but don’t actually resonate:
“Hit $1M in net worth by 40.”
“Buy the biggest home I can afford.”
“Retire as early as possible.”
These goals can become hollow checkboxes if they aren’t connected to your values, and when life changes (as it always does), they often lack the flexibility to evolve with you.
However, when goals are aligned, you feel it.
Aligned goals don’t just look good on paper – they feel empowering. Think:
Saving for freedom and flexibility, not just retirement.
Investing in a career path that energizes you – not one that drains you.
Using money to say “yes” to experiences that bring you great joy.
When your goals are rooted in self-awareness, they support you, not stress you out.
3 prompts to redefine financial success:
What are three things I want more of in my life (energy, time, travel, creativity)?
What would financial success feel like – not just look like?
If no one was watching, what would I really want to use my money for?
Try this today:
Take 10 minutes to write down one financial goal that excites you – not just one you “should” have. Put it somewhere visible and let it guide your financial choices. The most powerful goals aren’t the ones that impress others – they’re the ones that serve you.
